I ‘Heart’ Boating: A Valentine

Tim Claxton used his boat and iPhone navigation app to create a very special Valentine.

It is Valentine’s day, and I’m always looking for an excuse to get out on the water, so I thought it would be fun to create a heart message using my boat and iPhone navigation app. With temperatures hovering around freezing and snow still covering much of the boat, I ventured out from Seattle’s Shilshole Marina in my trusty C&C 29 to try it out. For anyone watching from shore, I must have looked very odd.

Valentine boat track

A very special Valentine’s Day message, by boat.

To generate this view I turned on the track recording feature on my iSailor navigation app. Using a mooring buoy as a reference point, I drove around a roughly 1/4 mile area, lining up points on the shore to work out when to turn.

I have to confess – I didn’t do any pre-planning, and I moved quickly in the cold. And the app was slightly delayed, so after I turned, the boat icon took a bit of time to catch up. It makes me wonder how much better I could do next year, with a little forethought. But this year’s result was just about acceptable.

So if you see anyone doing strange manoevers around your marina today, they must have had the same idea!

Think you can do better? Got a special track to share? Let us know about it in the comments below, or send a screen capture to

  1. It was a very good idea. Special and unique. A very imaginative way to enjoy the water and the pleasure to be on a boat.
