Ocean Alexander 120: Drawing Crowds Among the Yachts at Miami
Ocean Alexander, the builder best known for cruising boats sized from 72 to 90 feet, throttles up into the megayacht market with the introduction of its first boat over 100 feet, the new 120. It’s on display at the Miami Yacht & Brokerage Show on Collins Ave., where dock walkers and yacht watchers are taking in the long lines and uber-luxurious amenities of what the company says is the first in a new megayacht series.
Designed by Evan K. Marshall, the 120 trideck has been in development for several years. It represents a partnership between Ocean Alexander and Christensen Shipyards, which managed the build at its state-of-the-art 180,000-square-foot facility in Vancouver, Washington.
The new 120 features accommodations for ten passengers, six crew, and the captain, all in a vessel that’s certified ABS/MCA.
Among the features that are drawing interest and raising eyebrows are the main-deck master suite, which is something typically not found on yachts of this size, the cabin for the captain located off the pilothouse, and a tender garage for a 16-footer.
One of our favorite spaces is the salon, which makes for a great first impression with full-height windows, slabs of cool marble underfoot, and custom-made walnut and maple cabinetry. Forward of the salon, and open to it, is a formal dining area that’s designed to be a great entertainer with a huge handcrafted table that can be set for a sit-down affair or accommodate an incredible buffet-style shindig. Haute feature: the full-height cabinet designed to hold china, crystal, and silver oh-so-securely in rolling seas.
The next best space? See the Skylounge. It has the atmosphere of a private club, with handcrafted furnishing like the oversized L-shaped settee, game table, and bar. In one corner, a 42-inch flat-screen satellite TV is artfully concealed behind understated artwork. The Skylounge is also wired for an integrated surround-sound system with five Triad in-ceiling speakers and subwoofers. If you can’t get a party started here, it’s just not going to happen.
The Ocean Alexander 120 is the builder’s elegant entrée into a new market, but look for more big yachts from this builder in the future. There could be 112- 135- and 155-footers in the works.
