Beneteau Finishes Greatest Loop Odyssey

A Beneteau Swift Trawler 34 recently completed the Great Loop around the Eastern US with her return to Annapolis.

The Greatest Loop by Beneteau

The Greatest Loop, a Swift Trawler 34 by Beneteau, recently completed a circumnavigation of the Eastern United States.

The Greatest Loop, hull #202 of the Beneteau Swift Trawler 34 model, wrapped up her 5,137-mile, four-month journey after returning to her homeport of Annapolis, Maryland on September 6, 2012. The circumnavigation of the Eastern United States, called The Great Loop, began on May 15 and was completed at an ambitious pace.

Numerous stops on each of the 12 legs hosted media members and the curious public, while also providing an opportunity for new captains to take command. On day 71, Jeff Hammond reported, “The Greatest Loop closed the Great Loop today just after noon in light rain. The last day from St. Michaels was a short one and we buzzed up the bay at our usual 16-17 knots.”

Hammond came aboard in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and stayed with the boat up the Chesapeake Bay, making stops at picturesque destinations including Solomon Islands, Tangier Island, Oxford, and St. Michaels before arriving in Annapolis. The boat still has two highlighted events ahead. She will be on display at Trawlerfest in Baltimore on September 25. Then, a quick trip back to Annapolis will ensure that attendees at the US Powerboat Show (October 11-14) will have chance to tour the vessel and learn about the trip.

The tour has been called a resounding success by Beneteau and its long list of sponsors, including Raymarine, Navionics, Zodiac, Trawler Fest, DeLorme, Interlux, Dometic, Cummins, Onan, MarinaLife, ValvTect, Vessel Vanguard and the National Marine Manufacturers Association to name a few.

“When we first consulted experts about our planned journey on the Great Loop, we were cautioned that our schedule might be somewhat unrealistic,” said Beneteau Powerboats Division vice president of sales and marketing Laurent. “But we were fortunate [that] no significant hurdles impaired our travel plans.”

The intrepid trawler may soon have a new owner and a new destination. Annapolis Yacht Sales, which completed the vessel’s initial commissioning after her arrival from the factory in France in March of this year, was contacted by an interested buyer even before she completed her odyssey. There’s no doubt the new owner will have a well-proven vessel that has already shown she can go the distance.
