Video Boat Reviews, Take Two

The camera is rolling for Boats.com boat reviews, and the initial focus is all aluminum.

Sometimes the words flow easily, sometimes they take a few tries, but on the Lake of the Ozarks, at our second boat-review shoot, Charles Plueddeman was in good form in front of Paul Cronin’s WhiteCap Video camera. It was blowing hard on the lake, so we’d beached the Crestliner mod-vee fishing boat so Charles could introduce the boat, review its performance scores, and point out the features he liked without rocking the boat, literally, on the blustery lake waters.

We’d arrived at Osage Beach on Sunday night at the tail end of a 90-degree April day, and our plan was to test and shoot 3 boats —  the Crestliner VT 17 and TC 18, and the Stinger 18HP Special Edition, by Lowe. We awoke to 45 degrees and 20 knots of wind the next morning and began pulling out every scrap of clothing we’d brought. The show had to go on, and soon Charles ran performance tests of all three models, running them in the lake chop and finding calmer waters along the banks to check the speeds and fuel flow at various RPM levels. Near the end of the day, we were rewarded with some sunshine, and Paul got several clips of Charles cruising off into the sunset.

The sun came out on Tuesday and it warmed up, but it was still windy, so that’s when we hit the beach to run through the review script Charles had worked up.  We also filmed him interviewing company reps: with Clint Starnes from Lowe Boats we learned what a “pad hull” is on an aluminum boat and Charles demonstrated how the configuration can make the spray fly (at the cameraman). It wasn’t all work: Charles decided to surprise Steve Rock from Crestliner with a line about leeches in the dedicated bait buckets, and he got such a good laugh that he forgot the rest of his lines. Steve had a pretty good line of his own about the value of having a pair of fishwells, but you’ll have to watch the video to catch that.

Boats.com reviewers go all out when they test a boat such as this Crestliner VT17. This storage space was big, but Charles couldn't quite climb inside.

Spring had come to Missouri again by the time we left, but soon we were on to Chattanooga to review some hot pontoon boats from Harris FloteBote and Cypress Cay. Stay tuned. We’ve got more videos on the way.
