Maxi Dolphin MD53: Retro-Chic
Italian styling and modern production techniques combine into a highly efficient and luxurious motor yacht.
Once you cast your eyes on this ostentatious tender it is very difficult to turn away. This striking and unique motor yacht quite frankly oozes sex appeal, reminiscent of the Brat Pack days of the 1960s. However, the almost outrageous display of style is complimented by modern production techniques and specifications, resulting in a highly efficient luxury platform.
The Maxi Dolphin MD53 structure is created entirely from pre-preg carbon and glass fibres from Gurit, a global leader in the development and manufacture of advanced composite materials. This produces an extremely sturdy yet lightweight boat. The weight saving allows the use of lower-powered engines than normally used on yachts of the same size, resulting in much lower energy consumption. The MD53 is powered by twin 435HP Volvo Penta IPS 600 engines, far more efficient than inboards. This provides a higher top speed, better acceleration and superior performance than similar yachts of this type. The bottom-line is a scintillating top speed of 36 knots and a range of 490 miles, at a cruising speed of 30 knots.
Maxi Dolphin’s signature deck layout is minimalist and the MD53 is no different, though it incorporates new features such as the option of a dinghy storage and crane option. Standard features include an aft swim platform with pantograph door leading directly to the cockpit, and retracting side windows that provide protection at full tilt and an open air environment when at rest. The twin-seated helm station has a dashboard more akin to a light aircraft and its stylish design seamlessly fashions technological competence with a beautiful ergonomic layout.
Below deck layouts are totally custom, allowing owners to design accommodation exactly to their needs. For me the MD53 is no family cruiser or charter boat, and the single owner’s berth is the way to go. In this layout, the vast saloon table can seat up to twelve and is complimented by a horseshoe-shaped galley and a handy head next to the companionway, ideal when underway. The master cabin extends throughout the entire area forward, about half of the habitable space. A generous off centre double bed has a wealth of storage and leaves room for a seating area, whilst an impressive master ensuite provides a glamourous flourish to truly exceptional quarters.
Maxi Dolphin only turn out about ten boats a year across its range; the Italian boat builder places emphasis on quality rather than quantity. Each yacht is essentially custom built to the wishes of the owner, aided by highly professional engineers and architects, to draw and build the yacht that reflects the client’s dreams.
The Maxi Dolphin MD53 is rare indeed; totally desirable, brutally handsome and very purposefully designed—while exhibiting pure Italian sex appeal.
