Sunseeker 40 Metre: License to Thrill

Sunseeker have decided that big is beautiful, and their new 40 Metre yacht is full-on.

Take a look at any recent James Bond film and if there is a motor yacht, the chances are it’s a Sunseeker. The brand is one of the most famous in the world and one of the few British manufacturers left in the business. Like the well-known fictional spy, the company has a reputation for innovation blended with old-fashioned values. A Sunseeker could be likened to a private members club: distinguished yet unashamedly ostentatious, with a wealth of leather and a hint of steel. And perhaps with a secret gadgets room hidden behind the bookcase.

Since the world economy started to nose-dive, various luxury yacht manufacturers have reacted in different ways. Sunseeker have decided that big is beautiful and the 40 Metre yacht is a full-on superyacht built to full MCA and RINA specification. The Sunseeker 40 Metre made its world debut at the Southampton Boat Show in September 2010.

Although it is not the quickest of the Sunseeker range, it can still produce 24 knots and has a range of 1500 nautical miles. (Rumour has it that in tests the yacht topped out at 31 knots.) Accommodations are very spacious with space for 12 guests and nine crew. There are numerous cabin configurations and options, but the automated balconies to the forward master suite and main deck are a master-stroke. They provide additional space and extra natural light when deployed.
Some of the latest hi-tech products, including an integrated touch-screen-controlled lighting system and state-of-the-art audio visual system are available. Thermal imaging camera technology allows safer navigation at night and improves man-over-board recovery and intruder alerts.

As a company, Sunseeker have committed to producing larger yachts that boast luxury and performance. Some would say that it is a brave move to build boats of this size and cost without a buyer, however Sunseeker claim to have sold five already and will be producing three a year. Price is from £12.5 million – Shaken not stirred.
